On a random day in 2020, when I was 21 years old, I decided to pursue a career in tech as a self-taught dev. Why didn't I go to university or college at that age? Simply because at that point my family couldn't afford any tuition fees and I was working at a McDonald's to support myself. With all the free time and a little bit of money I had saved up, I decided I had to pick up a lifelong skill that would allow me to grow into something bigger, and so the journey started.

Fast-forward to March 2021, I landed my first ever developer job as a Junior Developer for a start-up called SendFX Limited in Australia. Since then I have developed my skills and built professional software like websites and APIs to help grow the company from a 10M valuation when I first joined to 100M.

These days I work as a Mid-level Full-Stack Engineer in a team of 20+ engineers, QAs, BAs and designers, helping people transfer hundreds of millions around the world every year.

In my free time, I like to study new technologies, hang around my loved ones, and just enjoy life.

Experience

Australia · Mar 2021 – Present

Highlights across 5+ years

  • Partner API: built 30+ endpoints (GET, POST, LIST, UPDATE) covering payments, trades, payment details, customer accounts, parent accounts and compliance. Large partners, including BoardRoom, Pay.com and PEXA (Australia), use it to integrate with the platform. I also generated its documentation website with Swagger and apiDoc.
  • Infrastructure as code: provision all AWS stacks with CloudFormation across 3 separate AWS accounts (development, staging and production), supporting 10+ per-developer environments plus UAT, CAT (staging) and production.
  • Security: use AWS Cognito for authentication (OAuth2 / JWT), and worked on a platform protected for all users by Imperva, a web application firewall and DDoS protection service. I follow the company's security practices: regular security training, and access to internal systems through a VPN.
  • Monitoring and release tooling: worked with Datadog for error and log monitoring, LaunchDarkly for feature flags, and a Microsoft Teams integration for live alerts.
  • Internal admin dashboard: worked on the admin website used by about 50 employees in sales, account management, compliance, management and marketing, from managing accounts and deals to platform configuration, white-label setup and lead widgets.
  • IFTI reporting (Australia): worked on automating IFTI reporting, saving a team of 5 about 20 hours per week that previously went into Excel entry, merging files, submitting to the reporting website, and fixing and resubmitting errors by hand.
  • Payment, ledger and compliance integrations: Currency Cloud and JPMorgan (payments), Modern Treasury (payments and ledgers, later replaced by a better option), and FrankieOne (compliance / KYC). I also worked on a ledger project.
  • Customer-facing React apps: the customer portal and customer hub, lead landing pages, and many UI features and widgets.
  • Scripts and fixes: wrote scripts for data migrations, production fixes and report generation, and resolved 100+ bugs over the years.

    • Designed and developed a public API that lets enterprises integrate with Send's system and harness the power of easy payments.
    • Enhanced maintainability by contributing to infrastructure design and architecture, and by establishing coding standards and best practices to keep the codebase consistent.
    • Conduct thorough code reviews to maintain high standards, giving constructive feedback to team members for continuous improvement.

    • Developed features across frontend, backend and some dev-ops for the company's customer-facing and internal websites.
    • Wrote unit tests and end-to-end (API) tests to improve codebase quality.
